about

The Perfect Wave is an anthem for the Australian summer. Youth, possibility, salty chips, hot bitumen and the cool of the surf. All from the perspective of a young Terrigal local living youth to the max. It’s also about change and conflict: for locals, tourists, developers and the environment.

To record their first two singles, The Summertimes locked in some of Australia’s most revered musos, including drummer Steve O’Brien (Tumbleweed), bassist Steve Bull (Icehouse), and guitarist Ash Naylor (EVEN, The Church and Paul Kelly). Behind the desk would be five-time ARIA-award winning engineer and producer Paul McKercher, who’s recorded with some of Australia’s most revered bands, including You Am I, Hoodu Gurus and Midnight Oil.

With everything cemented, The Summertimes tracked their first two singles for Rank and File Records at Sydney’s Rancom St Studios in October, 2022. “Perfect Wave” and “Inside” were written by Beniuk and Challenger respectively, and typifies their songwriting bents: “Perfect Wave” with its Aussie surf-cultured theme, driven by O’Brien’s relentless backbeat, and “Inside’s” nod to shimmering 1966 guitar chime. Yup, big, soulful, melodic power pop at its best, the both of ’em.

There’s a lot more to come, of course. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to spread the Summertimes’ sunshine.

lyrics

Tonight I’ll meet you at the Sandy Ball
Tonight another tale that is true and tall
But now there’s not a cloud in the Terrigal sky
Yeah now the surf is teaching me how to fly
My Sea Flight, I’m air borne
My free ride, the blue dawn
Loud boardshorts, the hot tar
Of the main street, and the hot car
And I don’t want to be nowhere else

Tonight
I’ll ride the perfect wave
Tonight
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
I’ll ride the perfect wave tonight

Tonight I’ll be a member of Midnight Oil
Tonight 30 degrees will be the point of boil
But now I’m drinking schooners to frame my mind
Yeah now this leaf and tip is riding out the time
My dress pants, my good shoes
Her new dance, dodging blues
The Skillion past midnight
Her tanned skin, my first time
And she don’t want to be nowhere else

Tonight I remember the Florida Hotel
Tonight, buried under concrete and the hard, hard sell
And now the beer don’t taste quite the same
Yeah now it tastes like progress and the tourists’ loose change
The tourists, their thousands
The purists still counting
The real cost, still mounting
So five star, surrounding
But they don’t want to go nowhere else
